Japanese maples are the perfect option for adding dramatic autumn leaf colour to the garden, as well as year round shape and structure. Acer palmatum ‘Sango-kaku’ is by far one of the best, grown as a large deciduous shrub or small tree; it looks fabulous all year round. Coral-red young branches bear 5-lobed leaves which open pinkish-yellow, turning green in summer and yellow in autumn. As the plant matures, the stems develop a vibrant red tint. In winter, once all the leaves have fallen, the new red shoots glisten beautifully in the winter sunlight; it’s no surprise that this Acer has received a prestigious RHS AGM.

How to Grow

Grow Acer palmatum trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It is quite important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves. Alternatively grow the Japanese Maple in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Watering
Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
