If you’re looking for a shrub to brighten up your garden on those dull, grey rainy days, look no further. Acer palmatum ‘Katsura’ is a deciduous shrub of erect growth with 5 to 7-lobed leaves which first appear bright orange in spring, quickly turning orange-flushed yellow with pink margins. As spring progresses, the colour deepens to a rich green, later changing back to bright orange in autumn. This Japanese Maple has been awarded a prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit.

How to Grow

Grow Acer palmatum trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade. It is quite important to give plants shelter from strong winds which can scorch the leaves. Alternatively grow the Japanese Maple in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.

Watering

Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
