Helleborus niger JOEL is one of the new hybrid Christmas Roses bred in Germany. Stronger and easier to grow than the original Helleborus niger.
Helleborus niger Joel is part of the outstanding new Gold Collection hellebore. It is compact with masses of buds and outward-facing flowers that appear over the dark green evergreen foliage. They bloom white, and age to a light green; in cold weather, they blush pink. They are lightly fragrant. Fully hardy in the UK. They grow to 45-50cm wide and high. Grow in well-drained but moist, humus-rich, fertile soil; lime tolerant. Shade tolerant. flower from December to February. To prevent seeds forming remove the faded flowers after flowering. This will build the plant up for the following winter.
Try pairing with other shade-loving plants such as ferns, Tiarella, Alchemilla and Hostas. Hellebores also provide a source of nectar to foraging insects, especially bees, when little else is in flower in winter.
