A classic Japanese Maple producing gorgeous, purple-red foliage that colours to brilliant, fiery red in autumn. This slow growing tree has an attractive open habit that forms a broad canopy and creates a dramatic silhouette in borders. Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ is an ideal small tree for a sheltered position and makes an excellent specimen for large patio containers.

How to Grow

Pot up acer plants and grow them on in cool frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside in their final positions. When plants are well grown, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before transplanting them in borders outdoors. Grow acer trees in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively grow acers in large containers using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3.
Watering
Water regularly throughout the growing season until acer trees are well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
